Normalcy has returned to the University of Lagos (UNILAG), after a
protest by the students of the institution, over the electrocution of a
female student.
The protest led by the students union, paralysed academic and
administrative activities on campus, forcing the Vice Chancellor, Prof
Rahamon Bello, to address the angry students.
On Tuesday, a 300 level Accounting female student, Oluchi Anekwe, was
electrocuted in front of one of the female hostels. The students union
President, Abiodun Martins said she was a first class student.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof Duro Oni, said:
‘’Unilag is not shut. We are in our offices and have attended various
meetings. Lectures are ongoing and the campus is peaceful.’’
A lecturer at the Political Science Department who declined to be named
confirmed students’ protest but reiterated that: “The university was
never shut and that calm has returned to the institution.
Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Laja
Odukoya, said the information that the university was shut because of
the protest was false and that his members have been lecturing the
students.
