David De Gea wants to sign a new contract with Manchester United after his move to Real Madrid dramatically fell through, according to reports in Spain.
Further stories emerged on Thursday night which claimed contract talks had opened between United and De Gea.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez,
who presented on Wednesday night what he claimed was "proof" that
United scuppered the deal, has ruled out a January move for the Spain
star.
This has left the 24-year-old keen to agree terms on a new
United deal that would see his current £35,000-a-week salary increased
closer to the levels of United’s top earners.
El Confidencial also reports that the relationship between Perez
and De Gea’s high-profile agent Jorge Mendes - who represents several
of Madrid’s Galacticos, including Cristiano Ronaldo,
and who was seen at United's training ground on Thursday - is "broken",
and claims that Mendes wields too much power at the Bernabeu.
“At Real Madrid Jorge Mendes has three players,” Perez told
Radio Cope. “Cristiano, Pepe and James Rodriguez, the three best players
that he represents.
“Jorge Mendes doesn’t influence Real Madrid.”
Perez had earlier stated that De Gea had "to do what's best for
his care", adding that he was not sure whether Real would sign him next
summer.
"It's safe to say that we won't be signing him [De Gea] in January," he said.
"De Gea has to do what's best for his care. We're not
contemplating what will happen next season, but we have three great
goalkeepers.
"We don't know what will happen in the coming year. He has to do what he has to do."

It appears De Gea’s best short term option is to sign an
improved deal at United because a move to Real Madrid now seems unlikely
at best.
United do not want an unhappy player and, while De Gea has acted
with professionalism throughout this summer-long saga, offering him a
deal that puts him in line with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Bastian Schweinsteiger may bring out the best in him for the current season.
