Sergio Ramos will sign a new contract at Real Madrid and finally end speculation he could join Manchester United, according to reports.
Spanish daily AS claim that the Liga giants have finally come to
an agreement with their captain over a new contract at the Santiago
Bernabeu and will hold a news conference next Monday to officially
announce the deal.
The Spain international joined Real Madrid from Sevilla in 2005
and has since become an iconic figure at the club. However, tensions
between the player and the board earlier this summer threatened to end
the longstanding relationship, with Ramos reportedly telling the club he
intended to leave this summer.
It was suggested that Louis van Gaal was keen on exchanging United goalkeeper David de Gea for Ramos, who was reportedly unhappy about the salary he had been offered as part of a new deal at the Bernabeu.
Real Madrid stood firm on their reluctance to allow their
captain to leave, with boss Rafa Benitez claiming from the start that
the World Cup winner would remain in the Spanish capital.
"I have a lot of respect for Louis van Gaal, but Sergio will be staying with us," the Real Madrid manager said in July.
"He is our player, our captain. I would like to see him (at the
club) at the beginning of the season, because he's a key player for us."

When asked whether he was absolutely certain the centre-half
would stay, Benitez added: "For me, 100 per cent. I insist that it is
clear for me and the club, Sergio will be here. Football is a curious
world, but Ramos will be staying."
It was claimed that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez
told Ramos that he would have been forced to quit the club if the
defender had have moved to Manchester United. But all seems to be
resolved in the Spanish capital and it is expected that Ramos will sign
the bumper new deal in the coming days.
