Mechanic stabs customer with bottle over N54,000, lands in court

An auto technician, Raymond Udema, who allegedly stabbed a customer with a broken bottle over money, was on Monday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates' Court in Lagos State.

Udema, 52, a resident of No. 48, Idimu Road, Egbeda, a Lagos suburb, is being tried for breach of peace and assault.

Sergeant Kehinde Olatunde, the prosecutor, told the court that the accused committed the offences on June 20 at Orilope Street, Egbeda.

"The accused stabbed the complainant, Mr Dave Oludapo, with a broken bottle on his head following a quarrel over N54,000.

"He stabbed the complainant because the man demanded for a refund of N54,000 which the accused collected for the repair of his car’s air conditioner.

"The air conditioner only worked for 20 minutes and stopped," he said.

Olatunde said the accused failed to refund the money in spite of pleas.

"The accused became angry, grabbed the complainant, tore his shirt and picked a broken bottle to stab him," he added.

The offences, Olatunde noted, contravened sections 166 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mr Aka Bashorun, adjourned the case to September 17 for mention.
