Police apprehend suspected robbers over N2.9m

BENUE State Police Command on Wednesday apprehended three suspected armed robbers who snatched a bag containing the sum of N2.9 million from a businessman in Makurdi, Benue State capital.
It was gathered that the businessman who owns a big shop at Wurukum area of the town had left his shop while driving to a nearby bank to lodge the money when the robbers who might have trailed him suddenly accosted him and made away with the money.
The man was said to have raised the alarm which made commercial motorcycle riders to give the robbers who were escaping in a Toyota Corolla vehicle, a hot chase.
However, luck ran out of them when policemen who were strategically stationed around Abu King Shuluwa Road, on sighting the robbers, engaged them in a gun duel in which two of them were apprehended while the rest escaped on foot leaving the money and the vehicle.
It was also gathered that one of the robbers who was escaping on foot was arrested by the police along Gboko Road.
When contacted, the state police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Austin Ezeani, who confirmed the report, explained that three of the suspected robbers apprehended were already in police net adding that investigation was on going.
Ezeani also disclosed that even though the businessman said the money was N2.9 million, the police counted N2,670,000 leaving a difference of N130,000.
