The Chairman/Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency
(NDLEA), Ahmadu Giade has condemned the involvement of young artisans
in drug trafficking.
Giade who spoke while reacting to the arrest of two artisans at the
Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos said that drug
trafficking limits the capacity to develop and actualize set goals.
The suspects, King Emeka Emehelu, a 39-year-old automobile technician
and Aduaka Chuka Christopher, 38-year-old baker were both apprehended
while returning from Brazil.
Giade urged artisans and members of the public to channel their talents
in solving problems in their environment rather than getting involved in
drug trafficking saying: “Young artisans are major players in our
economy today. They must learn to generate wealth by identifying and
solving problems in their locality. Most problems in our society today
are actually opportunities in disguise. The arrest of these young
artisans should serve as a warning to others to avoid drug trafficking.”
According to the NDLEA commander at the Lagos airport, Mr. Hamza Umar,
both suspects were found in possession of white powdery substance that
tested positive for cocaine.
His words: “King Emeka Emehelu was caught with two parcels of cocaine
weighing 1.595kg hidden in his luggage while Aduaka Chuka Christopher
was found to have ingested five wraps of cocaine weighing 80 grammes.
The cocaine had a combined weight of 2.395kg. They are being
investigated and will be charged to court soon.”
Emehelu who hails from Enugu State said that his one year sojourn in
Brazil was a serious setback to his career as an automobile technician.
His words: “I am married with four children. I left Nigeria a year ago
to Brazil. As a result of my poor living condition in Brazil, I spent
one year without seeing my family in Nigeria. I accepted to smuggle
cocaine for N1.2 million. I wanted to use the money to establish a
business for my wife who has been struggling to take care of my family
since I left Nigeria.”
For Aduaka, he said that he smuggled cocaine because he needed money
saying: “I worked as a baker in Brazil for one year, but the income was
not enough to sustain me. I would have made N2 million from this trip.
The plan was for me to smuggle the drugs to Nigeria and share the
proceeds with my sponsor. Unfortunately, I could only swallow five wraps
because I was vomiting the drugs. They were disappointed in me for
swallowing only five wraps. I regret getting involved in drug
trafficking.”
