Cristiano Ronaldo is a chief target for future MLS franchise LAFC, according to a new report.
The Mirror understand that the Los Angeles club have an “obsession” over signing the Real Madrid forward and also have early plans to move for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.
The new franchise will join the MLS in 2018, replacing dissolved
outfit Chivas USA. LAFC are backed by a host of wealthy individuals,
including NBA star Magic Johnson and Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan.
Each club is limited by a salary cap, although they are
permitted to sign designated players outside of financial restrictions
to lure international stars.
Ronaldo would follow the likes of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo, if he decides to make the switch in three years’ time.
"There seems to be an obsession in LA with landing Ronaldo," a source was quoted as saying by MirrorFootball.
"The league will be even stronger by then. He'd be a franchise
player for them and truly announce their arrival, and they think they
can sell him the 'American Dream'."
The report adds that Rooney, who enjoys regular holidays in Los Angeles, is high on LAFC’s shopping list.
OUR VIEW
Who wouldn't want to get paid an extortionate amount of money to wind down their career?
Ronaldo's inevitable regression will have surely begun at 33. If
he's still at Real Madrid come 2018, he would have a couple of options:
risk petering out in Spain or switch to another club. He's got three
years to mull it over and assess his fitness - after all, his talent
shows little sign of dwindling - but MLS might just prove the ideal
destination.
Anyway, he's bound to get plenty of offers from elsewhere
between now and then. Surely a return to Manchester United beckons
first...
